Star Ships Cross Paths!

How often do you witness two stellar vessels passing each other within six months of operations? At one of the world's most unique locations, such rare occurrences may become increasingly common.

Two mammoth vessels from MSC Jade service, each stretching 400 metres, crossed paths in Trivandrum Port's waters on the evening of 10th March 2025. As Mia (399.99 × 61.54 metres) completed unberthing and headed seaward, Mirjam (399.99 × 58.84 metres) approached from the opposite direction for berthing. This remarkable encounter at the port anchorage marks a first for South Asia! After approximately 40 hours at berth, Mia departed directly for Sines Port, Portugal. Mirjam, arriving from Singapore, spent 45 hours in operations before setting sail, also bound for Sines.

MSC Amelia (399.77 × 61.04 metres), the third vessel in the Jade series to call at Trivandrum, has departed Singapore. The 23,964 TEU vessel is expected to reach Trivandrum on 18th March at 1500hrs.

Bridging Asia and Africa

New ports mean new locations or new countries—gateways to fresh opportunities.

Following major services like Jade, Dragon, Carioca and Africa Express, MSC has launched extensive feeder operations. These routes and port networks demonstrate the true essence of a transhipment port's operations. Services carry distinctive names: Salalah Feeder, Chittagong Feeder, India Africa Service, and Indian Ocean Relay Service. The Visakhapatnam connection is dubbed 'Vizhinjam Shuttle', whilst the Mundra-Chennai Ennore route is known as 'Malabar Service'. Currently, 13 feeder services connect Trivandrum with various nations, utilising vessels ranging from 1,078 to 8,600 TEU capacity.

These direct shipping connections significantly expand our operational possibilities.

Methanol Revolution

The CMA CGM Iron, emblazoned with 'Methanol Powered' on its sides, has docked at Abu Dhabi's Khalifa Port. Previously, we reported on this 13,000 TEU methanol-fuelled vessel's maiden voyage past Trivandrum.

Dubai Follows Abu Dhabi's Lead!

Singapore-based AAL Shipping Company has christened their fifth methanol-fuelled vessel 'AAL Dubai'. The naming ceremony took place on March 12th in Guangzhou, China.

The vessel boasts a combined lifting capacity of 700 tonnes and is engineered to transport diverse cargo—including heavy lift project equipment, breakbulk, and dry bulk—all in a single voyage.

This new-build vessel features impressive specifications:

Cargo capacity: 41,500 cubic metres

Container capacity: 2,197 TEU

Length: 179.9 metres

Breadth: 30 metres

February 2025 container handling

TRV (west) has overtaken East coast terminals with 78,833 TEUs. West coast terminals maintain higher volumes, with AICTPL handling 252,026 TEUs.

The Experience Paradox

"Everyone wants experienced hands, but where does one gain experience?"

Private enterprises seek candidates ready to start immediately post-recruitment, typically avoiding training investments. Establishments coming to Trivandrum are likely to follow suit. Securing such positions requires port/shipping experience. The solution? Begin at nearby port facilities to gain experience before transitioning to Trivandrum establishments.
